The project involves the façade retention of the original 5 storey Edwardian façade, demolition of the internal structure and construction of a 3 storey basement and 7 floors of concrete and steel frame to tie into the existing façade, completed a new roof structure an refurbishment of the external façade.
Wharncliffe carried out careful programming of Phase 1 of this project including extensive underpinning of the existing façade, a 30m deep contiguous piled wall, excavation of the basement and construction of the frame and envelope.
Disposable of excavated material had to be carefully planned with wagons accessing a restricted one way street, just off Whitehall, with consideration given to limited space for loading of vehicles and concrete deliveries.
This project offered numerous challenges which had to be overcome to be successful. The existing façade was to be removed and replaced with a new glazed curtain walling system. The existing structure was too weak to take loadings of scaffold and the only access for operatives and materials was via a new lift opening formed from the basement car park.
Wharncliffe explored several construction methods, providing high level strategic planning and sequencing of the overall phasing proposals and methodology, along with detailed programming of the construction phase.
This project took several months of planning and involved the co-ordination of design and specialist subcontractors along with liaison with Network Rail to ensure safe interface with the train station and public.
